The WV Office of Tax Appeals is seeking the services of an attorney to serve as an Administrative Law Judge II within the Charleston, WV office. The selected candidate must be a graduate of an accredited Law School and admitted in good standing to the WV Bar Association. All applicants must possess a minimum of 3 years' experience as an attorney with trial experience or as an examiner or an administrative law judge with an administrative body or a judge of a court of record. Under the supervision and direction of the Chief Administrative Law Judge, the responsible candidate will handle an assigned case load with respect to the number of appeals received through the daily course of events within the office. In this management, cases are moved along on the docket by means of conducting daily telephonic conferences with parties and are set up by means of orders. Many cases will be resolved by mediation among the parties, however, some will move onto evidentiary and briefing events. This administrative tribunal functions in much the same way any court would with a certain degree of formality in legal process. The court is governed by the applicable statutes and procedural rules that adhere to strict timelines that occur throughout the appeal. The position requires the ability to prepare written decisions based on findings from hearings and /or briefs and in some instances by stipulation. Solid organizational skills and the ability to conduct hearings and control events, as well as phone conversations with parties is paramount. Research experience is a major factor in the ability to render quality decisions. State or Federal tax experience is preferred, however not required. The position is a Pay Grade 24 in the classified service for the State of WV. The salary range is from $54,228 -$62,500 per annum and will be based on experience. The State of WV also offers a complete benefit package that includes health insurance, annual and sick leave earnings and a retirement plan.
